I had an amazing day with Somerville Team members David Alade and Kevin Loo at Saddle Lake Cree Nation taking part in the Somerville Kihew Asiniy Jr./Sr. High School Drumming Exchange. David Alade, who was born in Nigeria, demonstrated the traditional Nigerian talking drum and Kevin Loo who has Fijian heritage, demonstrated the cajon drum. All grade 6 to 12 students had a great time keeping the beat with David and Kevin using the 11 djembe drums and a wooden bellaphone from Mali which Somerville generously donated to Kihew Asiniy’s drum collection. We were joined by the exceptionally talented drummers and singers, Ethan Pasquayak and Rixford Cardinal from Saddle Lake Cree Nation, who taught everyone about traditional Indigenous drumming. We can’t wait to drum together again in the future!
