The AltaLink 138kV 80L underground transmission project formed an important part of 18 separate developments designed to strengthen the electrical grid in the greater Red Deer, Alberta area. The ductbank itself was constructed in the Citys Riverlands redevelopment area and consisted of a 8-way 200mm Dia. duct bank spanning a distance of 750m which connected two overhead structures. Challenges included the excavation and handling of contaminated soils, rerouting under existing unknown utilities, extra depth ditch and intricate pipe bending techniques for tower placement.
